Wonder Woman: Another Attempt at “Wonder Woman”?

MARVEL’S AVENGERS has brought the next wave of superhero movies upon us. Warner Bros., as reported yesterday, is ramping up efforts to deliver their own super team, the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, to the big screen, hiring Will Beall (GANGSTER SQUAD) to do so. However, it was unclear if they are going to follow Marvel’s blueprint and create solo adventures for the more notable members of the JLA.

Unlike Marvel, most of the Justice League members are already well known to audiences (Supes, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern especially). But, as DARK KNIGHT RISES comes out in July, and a new SUPERMAN comes out next year, it looks like we can expect another attempt to put WONDER WOMAN in the lime light. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg (CONTACT, GREEN LANTERN, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX) is going to be given a shot at it, according to Variety.

Just google Wonder Woman movie and you’ll see dozens of different female actresses doctored into the Wonder Woman costume, showing how many attempts there have been to do this. After the disastrous attempt to bring WONDER WOMAN to TV last year (see picture above), there is no doubt much trepidation regarding this project. That being said, WONDER WOMAN remains one of the most recognized female characters in the world due to the comics and Lynda Carter. Ultimately, with all the crashing and burning that WB has suffered through in trying to bring some of its other characters to theaters, I remain very skeptical that any of this will actually happen.

Wonder Woman: Writer hired for Wonder Woman movie

DC has more than a Justice League movie up its sleeve. It's pushed ahead with Wonder Woman, too...

Along the breaking news of a Justice League movie pressing ahead at Warner Bros, a further nugget of information also appeared. And that's that a writer has been hired for the long-mooted Wonder Woman film. The writer in question? Michael Goldenberg, who previously penned Green Lantern. He doesn't appear to be working to a planned release date at the moment, as the project is very much in its infancy. But it's interesting news nonetheless, especially given that the recent attempt to bring Wonder Woman to the small screen didn't get very far at all.

If the film does go ahead, which now it looks increasingly likely to, you'd feel that it would be silly not to cast Christina Hendricks in the lead role. Even better: have Nicolas Winding Refn direct, as both were far from shy about discussing the project last year when publicising Drive.

Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman Movie Back on Track

The news was buried at the end of Variety's Justice League story yesterday, where it was stated that Green Lantern scribe Michael Goldenberg "was hired to write Wonder Woman." It's not clear when this hiring took place, nor if it was a move made in concert with the hiring of Will Beall to write the new JLA script for the studio.

Variety also points out that two other Green Lantern writers, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, are working on The Flash for director Greg Berlanti (also a GL vet!). This isn't news, but the overall impression is that Warner Bros. is finally getting serious about the rest of their superheroes in the wake of The Avengers' success (and with The Dark Knight trilogy soon coming to an end). What's less clear is why they're relying so heavily on the team that helped to create Green Lantern, which obviously was not the success the studio had hoped for (though certainly a bulk of the blame for that film has been laid at director Martin Campbell's feet).

Anyhow, Warners and DC have been trying to get Wonder Woman onscreen for some time. There was that Joss Whedon/Joel Silver big-screen push several years back (which must sting for the studio in this post-Avengers world), and just last year a TV show from The Practice's David E. Kelley, starring Adrianne Palicki, made it to the pilot stage before getting dropped. Now, the princess' time may finally have come.

Wonder Woman: Is Wonder Woman Cursed to stay in print media forever?

Of all the DC Comics superheroes, Wonder Woman is currently the most underused property in the comic book industry. After many failed attempts to bring the Amazon Princess to television or movie theaters, fans have begun to think that Wonder Woman is cursed.

Over the years, almost every major Hollywood studio had a Wonder Woman project in progress with big names attached to write and direct such as Joss Whedon and David E. Kelly. In fact, Wonder Woman came close to having another TV series air this season, when NBC hired Kelly to create the new show. Ultimately, due to bad reviews and fan backlash to changes in Wonder Woman’s backstory and personality, NBC was forced to pass on the series. Perhaps the problems do not lie with the studios, but the inconstant source material and the fans’ expectations.

Any faithful follower of Wonder Woman could state all the inconsistencies to her characterization, such as a naïve hero, a powerless spy, an ambassador for peace and a cold-hearted killer. While Wonder Woman has found some stability during her latest reincarnation, Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang’s version is very different from the beloved feminist icon made popular by the 1975 TV series starring Lynda Carter. This new Wonder Woman is a brutish demigod from a race of Amazons that murder and rape men to continue their race of women warriors.

In addition, fans are far too critical about writers sticking to the source material as well as creating a serious take on a character with many fantasy elements. Most of Wonder Woman’s stories feature her fighting giant talking gorillas on waterfalls or storming Mount Olympus to stop the Greek Gods. The source material does not allow for a realistic take fans want to see on the silver screen.

Wonder Woman: Justice League, Flash & Wonder Woman Movies Confirmed

Rumors of a live-action Wonder Woman film have continued to circulate occasionally. As recently as March 2011, Warner Bros.' Jeff Robinov said that a Wonder Woman film was in development, along with Flash and Justice League movies. The failure of last summer's Green Lantern movie may have poured cold water on that notion, however.

Meanwhile, other reports suggest Lauren Shuler Donner wants to produce a live-action version for release in 2013, and David S. Goyer could write or direct. Best take this info with a heaping spoonful of salt.

In 2010, Warner Bros. Television slated David E. Kelley to write and produce a Wonder Woman series, and a pilot was shot in 2011 starring Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman. In this pilot, Wonder Woman attempted to balance three identities: crime fighter, executive, and "modern woman." We watched the unaired pilot, and found that it was "bad in the ways that we were all expecting, but it's also bad in other, more fundamental, ways." At left, fan-made opening credits.

Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman Film rumor in 2013?

Received word from a new source close to Warner Bros. indicating the studio is developing a Wonder Woman film for a potential 2013 release.

This news comes as a surprise with so little time having passed since the Wonder Woman television pilot was passed on by NBC. While this new source appears to be legitimate, take this news with a grain of salt. Even our source admits that the project is in very early developmental stages, meaning that Warner Bros. is far off from actually committing to this production.

Wonder Woman: Review of Wonder Woman pilot

As Wonder Woman/Diana Themyscira/Diana Prince, Adrianne Palicki was a revelation. I was already a big fan of hers from Friday Night Lights but here she takes center stage and pulls off what is an extremely difficult role. She’s tough, she’s charming, she’s sexy, she’s vulnerable, and she’s got a little bit of an angry edge to her when she’s Wonder Woman that adds just a dash of exciting unpredictability. This could have been a star making turn for Padlicki who certainly deserves one.

The Wonder Woman on this show is a badass who is not above choking dudes with her lasso (her favorite move) or throwing a piece of pipe through your throat if you won’t stop shooting at her. For a weekly television show, the action scenes were fairly well executed and at times quite thrilling. The whole final sequence where she storms Veronica Cale’s compound and decimates her ‘roided out super-soldier army is really fun to watch.

The first time we see Wonder Woman she is wearing the version of the costume that we’ve seen with the blue pants. The biggest surprise in the entire pilot? When she shows up to take on Veronica Cale’s goons for the final big action scene, she’s in the classic pants-less comic book costume. That costume only appeared briefly in the script where it hung in the back of her closet. There is a mention of a designer coming in to discuss a new costume so it would appear that this Wonder Woman has different costumes for different occasions. Whichever costume she's wearing they all really work on-screen.

A lot of time was spent in the script on Steve Trevor and the effect that their break-up had on Diana. That’s toned way, way down in the pilot. In fact, the famous sequence where she has a sleepover with her best friend and eats ice cream and talks about their breakup and then cries because she misses Steve is nowhere to be found. Yes, there are a few flashbacks to their break-up, and yes, Diana misses Steve, and yes, it has affected her, but how she deals with it is handled in a much more realistic way. Diana is obviously lonely and does not have any kind of personal life and that was clearly being set up as a subplot to run through the series.

The streamlining of the script really worked in the pilot’s favor. The story moved much quicker than it read. For example, in the script, Diana spent a long sequence testifying before the United States Congress about her vigilante activities, which allowed for long and droning speechifying on both sides. That would have been really boring on screen. In the pilot, that sequence is swapped out for a scene in which she has dinner with one sleazy congressman. The same information about the government being uneasy with Wonder Woman’s activities was conveyed in a much quicker, and more compelling, way.

Wonder Woman: Justice League, Flash & Wonder Woman Movies Confirmed

Speaking with Hero Complex, Robinov dropped the following tidbits:

DC/WB wants to have a Justice League movie in theaters by 2013.
A Justice League script is already in the works.
Wonder Woman and Flash scripts are already in the works.
A Wonder Woman movie WON’T conflict with the TV show (see: Smallville and Superman Returns).
Batman will still be a franchise “centerpiece” after Nolan departs.
Batman will be “rebooted” or “reinvented” after The Dark Knight Rises, likely for the Justice League continuity.

We’ve known for a while now that Wonder Woman and The Flash, were being developed as films (particularly The Flash); however, I think it was widely assumed that the Wonder Woman TV Show was coming at us in lieu of the movie. It’s interesting that the character will be breaking into not one but two lanes of media.

Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman Movie Finally Happening?

Warner Bros. has been trying to get a Wonder Woman movie made for more than half a decade and at one point Joss Whedon was supposed to be the guy making it. He’s since jumped over to Paramount and Marvel, where he’s making The Avengers. So where does that leave Wonder Woman?

The Playlist says that Wonder Woman may be happening at last and that David Goyer, who wrote Batman Begins and all three Blade movies, is involved. They believe WB is about to announce a Wonder Woman movie to be released in 2013. What’s unclear is, if true, exactly where Goyer fits in.
